some time ago, i came accross a single dvd of Chaplin features... then, two days ago, came accross a set of four dvds released by the same company: Platinum Disc Corporation... sure, they are cheap releases, possibly just 'this' side of pirated, but where else are you going to come accross the following, collected, for a total of less than $14?
sunnyside
a woman
his favorite pastime
caught in a cabaret
the knockout
the tramp
the bank
tillie's punctured romance
making a living
kid auto races at venice
film johnny
the rounders
the new janitor
twenty minutes of love
the fatal mallet
the kid
cruel, cruel love
recreation
the masquerader
by the sea
mabel's strange predicament
between showers
a busy day
shoulder arms
triple trouble
laffing gas
the rival mashers
in the park
mabel's married life
face on the barroom floor
a night out
police
his new job
the immigrant
a night in the show
the cure
the floorwalker

Re: combing the discount bins
Sun, May 29, 2005 - 11:07 AMBrother Djin! Yes, I have seen those. But I always try to hold out for the better quality releases. Some of the music they add to these shorts seem a bit silly though.
I have yet to see anyone release decent copies of the earlier Chaplin/Keystone shorts (aside from Tillie's Punctured Romance). So maybe this is your best bet. -

Re: combing the discount bins
Mon, May 30, 2005 - 8:52 AMI've not been very happy with the Platnium DVD reissues of Chaplin Shorts. Sal is correct that the music doesn't always work and there seems to be a lot of sloppiness with regards to the transfer onto video.
The Delta Entertainment Chaplin DVDs which reissue all his shorts in chronological order (I'm still working on collecting them all) are a much better bet. The music is well picked and actually manages to work with the rhythms of Chaplin's movements.
I was really unhappy with the Brentwood "Best of Laurel & Hardy" set-- it was a set of two double sided DVDs. One of which had all sorts of defects on it-- and the company was completely unresponsive when I tried to contact them. There's a lot of interesting stuff on it like work that Stan and Ollie did in other films before they were teamed together, but also a lot of pointless stuff like their home movies. -

Re: combing the discount bins
Mon, May 30, 2005 - 12:19 PMPicked up two DVDs in Walgreen's discount bin. My Man Godfrey. And Meet John Doe. Each was only a buck ninety-nine. Hey, just wo bucks? That's like going to the movies back in the early '60s. Not too shabby.

Re: combing the discount bins
Sat, September 2, 2006 - 2:33 PMHaving recently moved and thus acquired new flatmates with a different DVD player, I discovered that the defects I had previously seen on the Brentwood "Best of Laurel & Hardy" set were gone. Seeing Stan and Ollie working with other, usually forgotten, comedians of the silent era (in Ollie's case, mostly in supporting roles) is particularly interesting.
I still maintain that only a little more than half of the work is really of interest, so the title "Best" is not merely hyperbolic but completely off-base. The best stuff on the discs are Stan's solo work where he plays a very different sort of clown.

Re: combing the discount bins
Mon, May 30, 2005 - 5:21 PMwell, hell, ya gotta figure it's a lot like back when they were new releases... you never knew for sure if you were going to hear a piano player 'sensitive' to the material, or if it was going to wind up being the future Harpo, playing Waltz Me 'Round Again Willie repeatedly, at different tempos... -

Re: combing the discount bins
Tue, May 31, 2005 - 6:59 AMWhat's the quality of the video transfer on these? Are they done fairly well, or is it scratchy and grainy? -

Re: combing the discount bins
Tue, May 31, 2005 - 7:03 AMThe Delta Chaplin DVDs are pretty good quality, I think-- the Platnum Chaplin is all poorly cropped-- like they zoomed in too close with a video camera as the reels were being projected on a screen. The heads of characters are often being cut off. -

Re: combing the discount bins
Sun, November 5, 2006 - 5:48 AMI usually snag the dollar DVDs when I can - if I love the movie enough I will seek out the Critierion or studio release- but sometimes it is the best way to get some of the black and white DVDs
